Badly damaged from its encounter with Something Horrible, Pegasus limps into the tiny Eventide star system; hoping to find food supplies and materials to repair its shattered systems.
Instead, they find a low-technology backwater colony called Eventide. Worse, the same alien busybodies that wreaked havoc on the colonies of Yronwode and Fallon are there also; preparing to mess with the Eventidian colonists as well. The Kariad try to "fix" human societies that don't measure up to their standards of equality and social justice, usually with disastrous consequences.
Commander Keeler makes a wager with the Kariad, if he can fix Eventidian society, the Kariad must leave humanity alone. If he fails, the Kariad can take a crack at restructuring his homeworld.
From there follows a tale of sea-going adventure, free enterprise, and pornography as Keeler and his crew travel the seas of Eventide seeking access to the 'Anything Boxes' that are the source of all the planet's wealth. If they can shut down the Anything Boxes, Keeler reasons, they can force the planet's people to work for themselves and set society right. Of course, those who control the Anything Boxes will do anything to stop them and hold onto their power.
Worlds Apart Book 10: Eventide incorporates parodies of several of Shakespeare's plays (Merchant of Venice, Hamlet, Macbeth, Othello), Firefly, the Twilight Zone, Twilight, and Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.
